Most Google searches now end without a click. Learn how Dubai brands can earn AI citations, local visibility and stronger search results.
Key Highlights
- SparkToro found that 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click during the first four months of 2026.
- AI Overviews accelerate the trend, but featured snippets, local packs, knowledge panels and instant answers also keep users on Google.
- Pew Research Center found that users clicked a standard search result in only 8% of visits where an AI Overview appeared.
- Zero-click visibility is not automatically worthless. A citation, map listing or featured snippet can still build recognition and influence later action.
- UAE businesses should prioritise AI citations, Google Business Profile visibility, direct audience channels and outcome-based measurement.
- Rankings and traffic still matter, but they no longer provide a complete picture of search performance.
For years, the basic search journey was easy to understand.
A customer entered a query. Google displayed a list of websites. The customer clicked one of them.
That journey is now being compressed.
Google can answer questions through AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask panels, knowledge panels, local packs and other search features. A user may check a price, find a business number, compare two products or get directions without visiting a website.
According to SparkToro’s June 2026 research, 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click during the first four months of the year. In 2024, the equivalent figure was 60.45%.[1] Although this research does not provide a Dubai-specific percentage, it shows how rapidly click behaviour is changing across Google Search.
For businesses in Dubai, the implication is clear. Search visibility can no longer be judged only by how many people reach a website.
This does not make SEO less important. It changes the job SEO needs to perform.
A capable SEO specialist must now help a business earn visibility within the search results, communicate its value before the click and make the remaining website visits more commercially useful.
What Is a Zero-Click Search?
A zero-click search is a Google search that does not lead to a click on another webpage.
The user may have found the answer directly within Google. They may have called a business from its profile, opened directions in Maps, refined the query or ended the session without finding a useful result.

The first two outcomes may still create value for a business. The third does not.
A local restaurant may receive a telephone call from Google Maps without recording a website visit. A consultancy may be cited in an AI Overview and later receive a branded search. A clinic’s opening hours may answer the immediate question while helping the patient decide where to go.
Search traffic captures only one part of this activity.
Why Are So Many Dubai Searches Ending Without a Click?
Zero-click search is not caused by one feature or one algorithm update. It is the result of Google gradually becoming a destination for answers rather than simply a route to websites.
1. AI Overviews answer complex questions inside Google
AI Overviews combine information from multiple sources and present a summarised answer near the top of the results.
For example, a person may ask:
- What documents are needed to buy property in Dubai?
- Which free zone is suitable for an ecommerce company?
- What is the difference between mainland and free-zone licensing?
- Which Dubai neighbourhoods are suitable for families?
- How does corporate tax apply to UAE small businesses?
Instead of clicking several websites, the user may read the summary and continue with a follow-up query.
Pew Research Center studied the browsing behaviour of 900 US adults in March 2025. According to its analysis, users clicked a conventional search result during 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared. The click rate was 15% on search pages without an AI summary.[2]
Pew Research Center also found that users clicked links within the AI summary itself in only 1% of visits.[2]
The figures relate to US users rather than the UAE. However, they demonstrate why an experienced SEO consultant cannot assume that a high organic position will produce the same click-through rate it did several years ago.
2. AI Overviews reduce clicks even for top-ranking pages
Ranking first still carries value, but it no longer guarantees attention when an AI-generated answer occupies the space above it.
Ahrefs updated its click-through rate research using data through December 2025. According to the Ahrefs study, an AI Overview reduced clicks to the top organic result by approximately 58% when compared with similar searches without one.[3]
The impact became smaller at lower positions, but remained negative throughout the first page.
This creates a new distinction:
|
Organic ranking |
AI citation |
|
Shows where the webpage ranks |
Shows whether the webpage supports the generated answer |
|
Can attract conventional clicks |
Can create visibility inside the AI response |
|
Depends on standard SEO performance |
Depends on retrieval, relevance and source selection |
| Remains important |
Must be tracked separately |
A search engine optimization specialist should therefore examine both. A page may rank first but remain absent from the AI Overview. Another page may rank lower and still appear as a supporting source.
3. Featured snippets and knowledge panels answer simple queries
AI Overviews receive much of the attention, but zero-click search existed long before generative AI.
Google already answered many questions through:
- Featured snippets
- Weather boxes
- Calculators
- Currency converters
- Sports results
- Definitions
- Knowledge panels
- People Also Ask results
- Shopping information
- Flight and hotel features
These formats are useful because users often want a quick fact rather than a full article.
The problem for businesses begins when a page supplies useful information but receives no attribution, brand exposure or commercial benefit.
A knowledgeable SEO expert should identify which informational queries are still worth pursuing. Some may build brand authority. Others may generate impressions without any realistic route to an enquiry or sale.
4. Local searches often convert without website visits
Dubai has a dense, mobile audience that frequently searches for businesses by service and location.
Examples include:
- Dentist near Dubai Marina
- Restaurant in Downtown Dubai
- Car repair in Al Quoz
- Business consultant in Business Bay
- Nursery near Arabian Ranches
- Property agent in JVC
These searches often display a Google Maps pack with ratings, addresses, telephone numbers, opening hours and directions.
The customer can take action directly from the results.
Google explains that Business Profile information can appear across Search and Maps. It also recommends keeping business information accurate and current.
This means a website click is no longer the only meaningful conversion. Calls, direction requests, bookings and messages generated from the profile may be more valuable.
A search engine optimization expert working in Dubai must therefore understand local search behaviour as well as conventional website optimisation.
5. The change is structural
SparkToro first reported that approximately 49% of Google searches ended without a click in 2019. Its 2026 analysis placed the figure at 68.01% for the US.
The study also found that the share of searches producing at least one click fell by 9.51 percentage points between 2024 and 2026. This represented a 22.9% decline.
The datasets across different years came from different clickstream providers, so they should not be treated as a perfect like-for-like sequence. Even with that limitation, the direction is difficult to ignore.
Google has spent years building features that complete more of the search journey within its own environment. AI Overviews have accelerated that direction rather than creating it from nothing.
How to Win Visibility When Most Searches End Without a Click
The goal is not to recover every click that Google’s interface has absorbed.
Some queries will never generate meaningful website traffic again. The more productive response is to capture visibility, trust and action wherever the customer is making the decision.
1. Optimise for AI citations as well as rankings
A page must first be technically eligible to appear in Google Search.
Google says that pages shown as supporting links in AI Overviews and AI Mode must be indexed and eligible to appear with a search snippet. It does not require special AI files or dedicated AI schema.[5]
The established foundations still apply:
- Allow Google to crawl important pages
- Use clear internal links
- Keep important information available as text
- Create helpful, reliable content
- Maintain a strong page experience
- Match structured data with visible content
- Keep Business Profile information current
Once those foundations are secure, content should be made easier to understand and cite.

Research into generative-engine visibility also suggests that evidence can improve how content is used. The Princeton-led GEO study found that certain content adjustments improved visibility by up to 40% within its controlled experimental setting.[6]
That number is not a promise of higher Google traffic. The research tested content that was already available within a fixed source environment. Its useful lesson is that credible statistics, relevant quotations and clear sourcing can strengthen an answer.
An SEO specialist in Dubai should use these principles without turning every page into a block of formulaic text. The information still needs original experience, regional context and editorial judgement.
2. Own the local search result
For businesses serving customers at physical locations, the Google Business Profile may be as important as the homepage.
A complete profile should include:
- Correct business name
- Accurate map location
- Local telephone number
- Current operating hours
- Relevant categories
- Service areas
- Professional photographs
- Product or service information
- Regular updates
- Genuine customer reviews
Business details should remain consistent across the website, local directories and social profiles.
Google’s LocalBusiness structured data can also communicate information such as operating hours and business departments. However, the markup must accurately reflect the visible page and should be validated before deployment.
An experienced SEO specialist will also monitor actions such as calls, messages, bookings and direction requests. These may prove that the local strategy is working even when website traffic remains flat.
For multi-location businesses, each genuine branch needs its own profile and location page. Copying the same text across every emirate or neighbourhood weakens the local relevance customers need.
3. Earn the citation instead of chasing the snippet
Appearing within an AI Overview does not restore all lost traffic, but it can improve performance relative to competitors that are absent.
Seer Interactive analysed more than 3,100 queries between June 2024 and September 2025. According to its research, websites cited within AI Overviews recorded 35% higher organic click-through rates and 91% higher paid click-through rates than websites that were not cited for the same type of result.
Seer Interactive also cautioned that this finding does not prove citation alone caused the increase. Stronger brands may be more likely both to earn citations and attract clicks.
That caveat is important.
The sensible objective is to build the qualities associated with useful, citable sources:
- Accurate claims
- Clear authorship
- First-hand experience
- Original research or examples
- Relevant statistics
- Current information
- Descriptive headings
- Concise answer blocks
- Strong topical relevance
- Trustworthy external references
The best SEO expert in Dubai should be willing to explain this uncertainty. No consultant can guarantee that Google will cite a page. The work improves eligibility, relevance and authority, while Google retains control over source selection.
4. Build channels that do not rely on repeated Google clicks
A customer who discovers a brand through search should not need to rediscover it through Google every time.
Businesses can turn search visibility into a direct relationship through:
- Email newsletters
- WhatsApp opt-ins
- Social media communities
- Webinars
- Downloadable guides
- Loyalty programmes
- Mobile applications
- Customer portals
- Branded video channels
Bain and Company surveyed 1,117 consumers in December 2024. As per the Bain and Dynata research, around 80% of consumers relied on zero-click results for at least 40% of their searches
Bain estimated that AI summaries and AI search behaviour could reduce organic website traffic by 15% to 25%.
A resilient strategy should therefore use search to create awareness while building channels the business can reach directly.
5. Reconsider which keywords deserve investment
A keyword can generate a large number of impressions and very little commercial value.
For example, a currency conversion or simple definition may be answered completely on Google. Creating a long article for that query may produce visibility without meaningful brand impact.
Evaluate keywords according to four questions:
|
Question |
Why it matters |
|
Can the query be answered in one sentence? |
Simple answers are more likely to remain zero-click |
|
Does the customer need deeper detail? |
Complex decisions can still create visits |
|
Can the brand add original value? |
Unique evidence improves differentiation |
|
Is there a commercial next step? |
The query should connect naturally to business value |
A skilled SEO consultant may recommend deprioritising high-volume topics when the likely benefit is weak.
Likewise, search engine optimisation consultants should identify queries where the brand can contribute something distinctive, such as UAE-specific guidance, original market data, professional experience or a useful tool.
6. Measure visibility beyond sessions
Traffic remains important. It simply needs to sit within a wider measurement framework.
Track:
- Organic conversions: Calls, forms, bookings, purchases and qualified enquiries.
- AI citations: Queries where the website appears as a supporting source.
- Featured snippet ownership: Keywords where the brand provides the direct result.
- Local actions: Calls, directions, bookings and messages from Google Business Profile.
- Branded searches: Growth in searches containing the company or product name.
- Share of search: How often the brand appears compared with competitors.
- Assisted conversions: Sales journeys where organic search contributed before the final action.
- Lead quality: Whether organic enquiries match the target customer profile.
Search Console data should also be read carefully. Rising impressions combined with falling click-through rate may indicate that a page remains visible while a search feature is absorbing more clicks.
A reporting system based only on sessions and rankings cannot show the full value of modern search.
What Does Good Zero-Click SEO Look Like?
A zero-click result can be beneficial, neutral or harmful depending on what the user sees and does.
Good zero-click visibility
The brand appears in a useful, accurate context.
Examples include:
- The website is cited inside an AI Overview.
- The business appears in the local map pack.
- A featured snippet includes information from the brand.
- The user calls directly from Google Business Profile.
- A knowledge panel displays accurate brand information.
- Search visibility leads to more branded searches later.
The user may not visit the website during that search, but the business still earns attention or action.
Bad zero-click visibility
The customer receives an answer without seeing the brand.
Examples include:
- A competitor receives the AI citation.
- Google uses generic information with no identifiable source.
- The business information in Maps is inaccurate.
- The page ranks beneath a complete answer and adds no reason to click.
- The query generates impressions but has no relationship to revenue or authority.
The role of a search engine optimization specialist is to increase useful exposure and reduce situations where content contributes no measurable value.
A search engine optimization expert should also recognise when a zero-click result is serving the customer well. The aim is not to force unnecessary visits. It is to ensure the brand remains visible, credible and easy to choose when a commercial need emerges.
Clicks Are Shrinking. Visibility Does Not Have To.
Zero-click search is now part of normal customer behaviour.
AI Overviews, snippets, maps and instant answers allow people to complete more tasks within Google. This can reduce website visits, particularly for basic informational queries.
Businesses still have several ways to win. They can earn citations, dominate local results, create deeper content, build direct relationships and measure commercial actions rather than traffic alone.
The strongest strategy accepts an important reality: the value of search may appear before, after or instead of a website visit.
